Summary

By Tony Meneses
Directed by Edward Torres

Raul is ill. He drinks, because he always drinks, just like el borracho on the lotería card. In his final months, Raul moves in with his ex-wife, who swore she’d never see him again, and their son, who’s longing to connect with his father at last. Developed as part of the Globe’s 2020 Powers New Voices Festival, the world premiere of Tony Meneses’s vibrant dramedy follows one family’s journey to come together so they can finally say goodbye.

Contains strong language.

Reviews

“Directed by Edward Torres with comic dash, freeze-frame action and playful between-scenes choreography. As Raul, Jesse J. Perez gives a marvelous, multifaceted performance that’s very funny, as well as charming, quirky, proud and mournful. The wonderful Zilah Mendoza plays Alma with the steely resolve of a woman who refuses to be hurt again by a man incapable of change. Matthew Martinez brings a youthful, nervous energy to David, who may love his flawed parents but keeps them at an emotional distance to protect himself and his secrets.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune

“Entertaining and touching. Full of laughter, color, and warmth.” —Broadway World

“A masterpiece! Feel good and balanced. A magnificent composition.” —Chula Vista Today
