Saturday Salon Speakers

All salon speaker events begin at 7:00 p.m. in Hattox Hall. Free; no reservations necessary.

H6: The Experience | August 17
This summer’s Henry 6 is not just happening on the stage! Nearly 1,000 San Diegans participated in events and workshops across San Diego—and more are participating in walk-on parts every night. Join The Old Globe’s Director of Arts Engagement, Adena Varner, and special guests to talk about the community involvement in Henry 6, this monumental undertaking, and how you too can get involved in the Globe’s arts engagement work.

Shakespeare and "Game of Thrones" | August 24
Were you fascinated by “Game of Thrones”: the complex webs of politics and deception, the shocking acts of violence, the forbidden love affairs? Dr. Jeff Wilson will give an inside look at how George R.R. Martin took all of that and more from the historical Wars of the Roses—the same events that inspired Shakespeare’s Henry 6. Come see how your favorite characters from the acclaimed TV show appear in a different form on the Globe stage this summer!

Barry Edelstein In Conversation with Dr. James Shapiro, supported by the Fuson Family | August 31
Two of the greatest minds in American Shakespeare come together to discuss Henry 6. Globe audiences have thrilled at Shapiro’s previous visits to the Globe, and he returns for one night only to dive into this summer’s epic production. Edelstein and Shapiro will also talk about Shapiro’s latest book, The Playbook: A Story of Theater, Democracy, and the Making of a Culture War, and about how Shakespeare continues to shape American culture today.

Shakespeare and Disability: Discussing Disability Representation in Shakespeare’s Plays | September 7
Curious about how the character of Richard III is addressed in modern performances? Have you ever wondered what an Elizabethan mobility aid looks like? Join acclaimed scholar Dr. Katherine Williams for a discussion about disability representation in Shakespeare’s plays, both in the Renaissance and onstage today.
