The Old Globe seeks to introduce new audiences not only to theatregoing, but to the process of creating art, and to the tools to create theatrical art in their own communities. With our Community Partners, The Old Globe has created programs to introduce individuals to the wide range of creative jobs in theatre and the arts beyond those visible onstage. We want to expand the definition of "community" to include groups defined by a shared experience, geography, demographics, identity, profession, and other characteristics. Participation is free. Workshops are limited to 15 people and are held at various locations in San Diego County.
Workshop
Community Voices, our free playwriting workshop, continues to offer online workshops to select audiences and community partners. Some of these have moved to in-person gatherings following COVID-19 safety protocols. If you're interested in getting involved with this program, you can email InfoAE@TheOldGlobe.org. Community Voices is a series of free workshops dedicated to the process of creating short plays by adult residents of San Diego County in and for their communities. Adults 21 years and older representing diverse underserved communities will be invited to participate. This is a beginner-level course where no experience is required—only the desire to learn and share stories. Participants will attend free playwriting workshops, dinners and performances, culminating in a presentation of their own plays, which are performed by five professional actors in front of their family and friends at The Old Globe and in their communities.

Behind the Curtain offers free online videos on our The Old Globe YouTube channel for those interested in theatre design and behind-the-scenes. Private workshops with community partners and selected audiences are being offered online or in-person following all COVID-19 safety protocols. Behind the Curtain is a free workshop offering a chance to explore the magic of creating a theatrical production. Using a scene from a Shakespearean play in our season, participants will read and explore the major themes and story. They select a scene to discover through a series of eight workshops that introduce a different design discipline: Hair and Makeup, Costume Design, Stage Management, Scenic Design, Sound, Lighting, and Props. Designers will provide their unique insight and lead participants in an interactive activity teaching the principles of their design discipline while teaching practical and transferable skills. Participants will visit the Globe’s Technical Center, our Balboa Park campus, and receive free tickets to see the production. Workshops are intended as stand-alone offerings, so attendance is not mandatory and participants can join at any point to deepen their connection and understanding of theatre.
